Nenagh AFC marks friendship with German club

By Padraig Ryan

Nenagh AFC welcomed members of German club Spvgg Hattstein to Nenagh at the weekend, for a celebration of twenty years of friendship between the two clubs.

The relationship first began in 1999 when members of the German club based in Schmitten, a small town about one hour outside Frankfurt, visited Dromineer on a fishing trip. While there, they enquired about the possibility of playing a friendly against a local side and so a great friendship was born.

Nenagh AFC later made a return trip to Schmitten and since then the two sides have hosted each other every couple of years. The relationship stretches further than simple footballing terms with a number of the Spvgg Hattstein group attending weddings of Nenagh players as guests and are due to do so again later this year for the wedding of Nenagh star Michael O’Gorman.

It is fitting that this trip occurred exactly twenty years to the weekend of the first game between the sides but also occurs at the end of a week that saw the birthday of the late Nenagh stalwart Eddie McCormack.
