Thurles slip up in derby

By Padraig Ryan

In the NT&DL Premier Division, Borroway Rovers came out on top in the Thurles derby with a 3-1 home win over rivals Thurles Town in Loughtagalla Park on Sunday morning. The home side bounced back from the previous weeks drubbing at the hands of Killavilla United to inflict a damaging defeat on their cross town rivals.

Rovers goals came from Séamus Woodlock, Tom Rykala and Keith Moore while Town’s lone reply was scored by Pádraig Fogarty as the holders find themselves six points off the pace with just six games to go.

In a bottom of the table clash, Clodagh Rangers played host to Holycross in Drombane and the sides couldn’t be separated on a 3-3 scoreline.

Scorers for Holycross were Neil Condon, Seanie Comerford and Johnny King. This result suits neither side with both cut adrift at the bottom of the table and a huge turnaround in the second half of the season will be required if either are to be playing top division football next season.

Division 1

Shinrone United pulled clear at the top of the table with a comprehensive 8-2 win over Gurtagarry. John Pio Fitzpatrick scored twice with Nistor Tordeci, Derek McLoughlin, Ian McLoughlin, Jason McCormack, Coley Cleary and Michael Cordial also finding the net for Shinrone. Gurtagarry responded through Tom Hasset and Dinny Corcoran but this loss sees them rooted to the foot of the table and in a real uphill battle to avoid relegation.

Moneygall slipped to second in the table when they were held to a 4-4 draw in an epic encounter against Rearcross on Sunday. Rearcross looked set for the win when they moved into a 4-1 lead with a Michael O’Gorman hat-trick and a James Deegan strike, but Moneygall scored three goals in the last ten minutes to secure a share of the points. Joe Callaghan scored twice for Moneygall with Tadhg Kennedy and Stephen Maher also finding the net.
