A late Kildangan push staved off a gallant Portroe challenge in what proved a thoroughly absorbing County Senior Hurling Championship clash on Saturday evening.

Favourites going into this encounter, Kiladangan were made fight all the way by a Port’ side that refused to just go away with Tommy Guilfoyle’s charges displaying bucket-loads of character to push an impressive Kiladangan side to the pin of their respective collars.

Trailing by six points at the break, and having previously trailed by nine in the opening half, Portroe put in a tremendous second-half shift to fight their way back into an encounter that appeared to be slipping away from them, and with just nine minutes of normal time remaining they were back on terms at 1-17 apiece.

Kiladangan circled the wagons though in the closing stages and mustering all their experience they pulled three clear once more as Portroe went in search of an all important second goal in a bid to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat.
