Bad roads causing stress

Badly deteriorated tertiary roads are causing people stress, Cllr John Carroll (FF) told the May meeting of Nenagh Municipal District.

He said the problem is particularly acute for people in the farming sector who can't even access some cul-de-sac roads and laneways, such is the condition that they have fallen to. Cllr Carroll said he was asked to raise the matter again as people don't think the local authority realises the stress that they are under.

In agreement, Cllr Mattie Ryan (FF) said he has never seen the tertiary roads as bad as they are now. “It's a disgrace,” he commented.

Cllr Michael O'Meara (Ind) said the problem won't be solved without money and he once again called on the council to obtain a State loan so as to tackle the worst roads. Local farmers have generated multi-million-euro turnover for the economy and “that kept us going during the recession; we can't turn our back on them now”, Cllr O'Meara said.

Among the problematic roads mentioned were the Cornode, Carrigal, Castlesheelagh and Coosane roads.

District Engineer Peter Fee agreed that a lot of tertiary roads are in a poor state but he said the council has not been given the funding required to repair the majority of them. In response to questions from Cllr Ryan, he said further monies would be required to resolve an issue with flooding in Templederry village.
