Lissenhall Players present hilarious comedy, ‘The Communication Cord’

Lissenhall Players are proud and delighted to announce that their next production is Brian Friel’s hilarious comedy 'The Communication Cord', directed by Kevin Whelan, who himself is no stranger to the stage.

Kevin has tread the boards for many years with the Nenagh Players in many memorable roles, most notably, Joxer, in ‘Juno and the Paycock’ and Johnnypateenmike, in ‘The Cripple of Inishmann’. This is Kevin’s directorial debut of a full length production and he is delighted to be standing at the helm this year.
'The Communication Cord' centres around scheming barrister Jack McNeilis (Conor Delaney) and his hapless friend, junior lecturer Tim O’Donoghue (Shane Egan), and their attempts to get bombastic Senator Dr Donovan (Maurice Daffy) to allow his daughter, Susan (Debbie Finn) to be Tim’s fiancée and, hopefully, at the same time secure a fulltime lecturing position for him.

To impress the senator, Jack brings Tim to his cottage in Donegal, which Tim pretends is his. The problem is that Tim is a high-strung academic who is nervous and not really comfortable about going through with the plan of pretending the house is his. The scheme goes horribly and hilariously awry when unexpected houseguest, Claire Harkin (Edel O’Brien) refuses to play along.

Other visitors of the already full house include local busybody, Nora Dan (Noreen Kelly), wealthy German, Barney the Banks (Sean Butler), Jack’s (current) French lady friend, Evette Giroux (a shared role played by Sheelagh Chadwick and Maeve O’Sullivan) — with an unexpected connection of her own — and the house itself, which seems to be possessed of a mischievous nature. Altogether, it’s a recipe for disaster as Tim starts feeding everybody a different story and then fights to keep his deception from unravelling completely.

With a wonderfully strong cast who are in the very capable and safe hands of Kevin Whelan, along with a committed backstage crew working away hard, this play promises to be a huge hit with Lissenhall audiences.
