New lifeboat donated to Lough Derg RNLI

In memory of his late wife, Robert Spier is generously donating a new lifeboat, an Atlantic 85, 'Jean Spier', to Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat station.

The boat is currently nearing construction at the boatyard at the RNLI Lifeboat College in Poole.

In preparation for receipt of their new lifeboat, volunteers at Lough Derg RNLI will have intensive training on an Atlantic 85 in October. The new lifeboat differs in specification to the station’s current Atlantic 75, Elsinore.

In November, volunters from the local RNLI fundraising branch, Operations Team and crew at Lough Derg RNLI will travel to Poole to meet Mr Spier and to attend the official naming ceremony.

This is an enormously generous gift to the RNLI and to Lough Derg; we are honoured and appreciative of Mr Spier’s great kindness and support of the lifeboats.

The RNLI charity saves lives at sea. Its volunteers provide a 24-hour search and rescue service around the Ireland and the UK. The RNLI operates over 230 lifeboat stations with 44 in Ireland. The RNLI is independent of the Coast Guard and government and depends on voluntary donations and legacies to maintain its rescue service. Since the RNLI was founded in 1824 its lifeboat crews and lifeguards have saved over 137,000 lives.
The RNLI is a charity registered in England, Scotland and the Republic of Ireland.
