The 100th anniversary of Fianna Fáil in North Tipp

Nenagh historian, John Flannery, has been engaged by the Fianna Fáil North Tipperary Comhairle Dáil Ceantar to deliver a history talk marking the 100th anniversary of the foundation of the Fianna Fáil party.

Following consultation with the party, the topic selected by the speaker is – Fianna Fáil, the Formative Years in North Tipperary 1926-32.

The talk will examine how the party was established locally in Tipperary and how it rapidly developed throughout the constituency. It will look at the personalities involved as the fledgling organisation prepared to contest elections, including the 1927 and 1932 General Elections along with the Local Election of 1928. This talk will be of interest not just to members of Fianna Fáil, but also to anyone interested in politics or the history of how our nation developed in the years following the Civil War. It examines an important period in the development of our democracy, following the struggle for independence and the tragedy of a bitter civil war, taking into account how the political parties of the time dealt with the transfer of power following the 1932 General Election.

Friday next, October 16, is the date and Nenagh Arts Centre, Banba Square, is the venue with the talk starting at 8pm. Doors open at 7.30 and during the lead up to the commencement of the talk, a slide show covering important moments in the 100-year history of the local Fianna Fáil organisation will be displayed. There will also be a broad selection of memorabilia on display covering the past one hundred years.

Admission on the night is €10, which includes tea/coffee and refreshments. Tickets will be available on the door or can be purchased in advance from any committee member or from the local Fianna Fáil constituency office, Kickham St, Nenagh.
