Over 20 cyclists participated in the guided Heritage Cycle last Saturday week organised by the Cloughjordan Parish Heritage Group.
Caimin O'Brien, who is an archaeologist with the National Monuments Service, led the group from the Middle Country Café in Cloughjordan at 10.30am.
The group cycled via Emill Castle and Templeharry Church to the townland of Cullenwaine and to the farm of the Chadwick family.
Caimin spoke at length about the medieval tower house, bawn and the 17th century house situated on the Chadwick farm.
Thanks to the Chadwick family for hosting the group and for providing delicious refreshments for all.
Cloughjordan Parish Heritage Group held a heritage cycle to visit Cullenwaine Castle and Bawn. Guided by archaeologist Caimin Ó Brien from the National Monuments Service, the group were joined by some of our neighbours in Ballymackey and enjoyed some lovely September weather on their cycle out through Emmel and Templeharry. Arriving at Cullenwaine, all were warmly welcomed by the Chadwick family, who had very kindly laid on some delicious refreshments for all to envoy. Caimin gave the gathering a detailed historical record of the castle from the days of when it was the centre of a large Ó Carroll estate.
