Valerie, Erin and Joe Bourke remembering Anthony Bourke at the start of National Heritage Week in Roscrea.

August session at the Black Mills

Roscrea Heritage Society would like to extend its sincere thanks to Dinny & David Quirke for kickstarting National Heritage Week events in Roscrea with a lovely evening in the Black Mills, held in memory of the late, great Anthony Bourke.

Anthony has a very special place in the story of the Black Mills Sessions. He played at the very first session in 2022, and it was lovely to come together again in his memory and celebrate the music and memories he helped create.

Dinny & David treated the audience to banter, laughter and original songs from David.

It was a wonderful evening of music, friendship and memories, and the society looks forward to welcoming this talented father and son duo back to the mill again.

The society would also like to thank the OPW for the use of the stunning venue, Caoimhe Flannery for her warm welcome and introduction to the evening, and for providing refreshments during the interval, and Sadhbh for all her help.

Last but not least, heartfelt thank you to everyone who came along and supported the event. All proceeds from the night were donated to Roscrea Hospice.

A special thank you to David, who brought along his own CDs on the night, and generously donated all proceeds from their sale to Roscrea Hospice.

SAVE THE DATE!

The society is looking forward to welcoming back Carmel Minogue for what promises to be another fabulous evening in the mill on Friday, August 28. A native of Roscrea, Carmel Minogue has been singing for most of her life, first finding her voice singing in local churches from around the age of 16. Music has remained a constant throughout her life, from singing at weddings and funerals to many years gigging in pubs and other venues.

Now living in Co Laois, Carmel enjoys a quieter and more intimate style of performing, accompanying herself on guitar and Celtic harp. Her musical taste is varied, with a particular love for Irish ballads and country music, along with a little bit of everything in between.

Carmel also has a passion for songwriting and has written a number of her own songs over the years. She is looking forward to sharing some of these original songs at the Black Mills Sessions, alongside some much-loved favourites.

Outside of music, Carmel is a celebrant and holistic therapist with a deep love of sound and its ability to connect, uplift and heal.

Sound and music are woven through much of her work, but singing has always held a very special place in her heart.

For Carmel, coming back to perform in her hometown of Roscrea makes the Black Mills Sessions that little bit more special.
