Call to take part in Run with Dunne

Borrisokane Athletic Club host the fourth annual Run with Dunne 5K Road Race and Fun Run, an event that has grown from a simple idea into one of the most inspiring celebrations of inclusive sport in Ireland.

The event takes place this Sunday, August 2.

When the race was first established four years ago, the club's goal was to demonstrate that athletics should be accessible to everyone, regardless of ability. What began as a way to showcase the club's commitment to inclusion has since become Ireland's first and only fully para-inclusive road race, attracting runners, walkers and families from across the country.

The impact of the event has extended far beyond race day.

At the heart of the story is local wheelchair racing athlete - Cillian Dunne, whose involvement inspired the event's name. At the time of the first race, Cillian was the club's only para athlete. Today, Borrisokane AC has developed into one of Ireland's strongest para athletics clubs, with six para athletes proudly representing the club.

Their success has been remarkable. At last year's National Para Athletics Championships, Borrisokane athletes returned home with eight All-Ireland gold medals, highlighting not only their talent but also the importance of providing opportunities for athletes of all abilities to train and compete together.

Every euro raised through the Run with Dunne 5K is reinvested into improving facilities and opportunities for athletes within the club. Previous fundraising has helped purchase adaptive and safety equipment while also making the club's training facilities more accessible.

This year's fundraising has an exciting target. The club hopes to raise funds towards the development of a tartan sprint track, providing a safer, more stable training surface that will benefit every athlete while particularly enhancing accessibility for wheelchair racers and para athletes.

Club officials say the race is about much more than running.

"It represents opportunity, inclusion and community. Every person who enters the race, volunteers or supports from the sidelines is helping us build an environment where everyone has a chance to participate in athletes.”
