Meriden extends winning run for Hogan in Killarney

Paddy Twomey gave Billy Lee the first of his two winners at Killarney on Monday of last week when saddling the two-year-old City Of Dubai to win the eight furlong maiden.

The 8/1 chance led a furlong from home and kept at it well to beat Ger Lyons’ Francillon, another at the same odds, by half a length with Aidan O'Brien’s 30/100 favourite the same margin back in third place.

Lee followed up with a more clearcut success on Henry de Bromhead’s 11/2 shot Chicago Moon in the concluding 11-furlong handicap.

O’Brien bounced back from his surprise first race reversal to take the three-year-old conditions’ race with 15/8 chance Straight Up.

Ridden by Wayne Lordan, he led close to the finish to score by three-parts of a length from the Ger Lyons-trained 4/7 favourite Res Ipsa.

Kaitlyn Ryan rode her first winner when partnering the Bill Durkan-trained Eagle Fang to take the amateur riders’ maiden at Killarney on Tuesday.

The Moyglass rider brought the 15/8 favourite through to lead well inside the final furlong to beat the Edward Power’s 2/1 shot Sunny South West and Derek O’Connor by a length and a half.

The Denis Hogan-trained Meriden extended her winning run to five with a career-best effort in the Listed Irish Stallion Farms EBF Cairn Rouge Stakes at Killarney on Wednesday.

Owned by Patrick O’Brien and Linda Shanahan, daughter of Cairn Rouge’s trainer Michel Cunningham, the 11/2 chance raced just off the pace and led inside the final furlong to beat Joseph O'Brien’s slow-starting 2/1 favourite Green Carrera by a length and a half under Chris Hayes.

Hogan landed a second winner on the evening as 17/2 shot Loyal Touch and Daniel King took the concluding 14-furlong handicap for the Sunnyhill Racing Syndicate.

The six-year-old led on the run to the furlong-pole to beat Donnacha O'Brien’s 4/1 shot Celestially by three and a quarter lengths.

Sam Coen took two of the later races on the on the card for trainer Willie McCreery and Paddy Magee. McCreery’s 85/40 favourite Bella Colombia took the eight-furlong handicap by a length and a half from the David Marnane-trained 8/1 shot Jasmine Affanalis and Arch Enemy followed up on her Navan win of four days earlier for Magee and Coen with another last-gasp success in the 11-furlong handicap in the colours of the Black Steel Square Syndicate.

David Marnane gave Rebecca Parsons her first winner when sending out Ardadslosttheplot to take the seven-furlong apprentice handicap at Leopardstown on Thursday.

A 7/1 chance in the colours of Amy and Olivia Marnane, the three-year-old headed Tom McCourt’s 11/1 shot Dynamic Force inside the final furlong and pulled away to win by two and three-parts of a length.

Andy Slattery and his son Andrew got the better of a Marnane runner as they won the eight-furlong handicap with the 100/30 chance Loughrea. The four-year-old led before the furlong-pole and held 3/1 shot Aviatrice and Luke McAteer by half a length.

Gortnahoe conditional Niall Moore and Limerick trainer Donncha Duggan took the second division of the two and a half-mile opportunity handicap hurdle with the six-year-old Luck Between Us.

The 33/1 chance headed Mark Molloy’s 9/2 shot Koeur A Prendre at the final hurdle and went clear to win by two and three-parts of a length for owners Cyril O’Hara and Peggy Bourke.

Andy Slattery added to his Leopardstown success earlier in the evening as the Adam Ryan-ridden Caislean Gear won the first of the bumpers on the card.

Owned by the Taceec Syndicate, the 2/1 favourite made every yard of the running and held off Paul Nolan’s 4/1 chance Emergency Man by a length and a half.

Fethard amateur Aine Connolly partnered her first racecourse winner on the John Burke-trained Farney Bridge in the concluding lady riders’ bumper. Another 33/1 chance, the six-year-old came from off the pace and led over a furlong out to beat Conor Houlihan’s 11/4 joint-favourite Flashy Red and Maxine O’Sullivan by three and a quarter lengths.

John Ryan saddled back-to-back winners at Killarney on Friday as he completed a double on the day with two 5/1 shots.

JJ Slevin partnered the six-year-old Pets Georgina to a comfortable victory in the near three-mile mares’ maiden hurdle for owner Loughlin Harte. She made all the running and was clear from the final hurdle to beat Ian Donoghue’s 9/2 chance Chisel Hill by four and a half lengths.

Michael Kenneally then followed up in the handicap hurdle over the same distance on the Walter O’Connor-owned eight-year-old My Gaffer. He made most and saw off Eric McNamara’s 20/1 chance Hees Dynamite to win by a length and a half.

Cian Quirke landed his own double when riding winners for Harry Kelly and in-form Andy Slattery.

The DQ Number Eleven Syndicate-owned Femme Magnifique was Kelly’s winner in the two-mile one-furlong handicap chase. A 4/1 chance, she came from a little off the pace to lead on the run to the final fence before pulling clear to score by eight and a half lengths from The Banger Doyle, a 12/1 chance trained by John Queally.

Andy Slattery made it three winners in two days as the Cian Quirke-ridden Ladies Well captured the opening division of the near three-mile handicap chase.

In the colours of the Mrs Crogh’s Syndicate, the 33/1 shot had plenty in hand in scoring by five lengths from Ian Donoghue’s 15/2 chance Mobile Mamma.

Moyne amateur rider David Doyle won the concluding bumper on the 14/1 chance Unquite Dreams for the Forever Five Syndicate and Fermoy’s Sean Allen. The six-year-old battled well to beat Eugene O’Sullivan’s, another at odds of 14/1, by a head.

Racing at Down Royal on Friday began with a win for the Josh Halley-trained 15/2 chance Tatianna, ridden by Jack Cleary. She led inside the final 100 yards to beat Gavin Cromwell’s 7/2 shot Bit Of A Buzz by two and a quarter lengths in the five-furlong nursery handicap.

Next into the winners’ enclosure was Rosegreen trainer Tanya Browne who landed the five-furlong handicap with Viamonte which was ridden by her son Adam Browne-Souza, his sixth winner. In the trainer’s own colours, the 10/1 chance raced up with the pace and led inside the final furlong to beat Willie McCreery’s 4/1 co-favourite Dandy Land by three-parts of a length.

Aidan O'Brien won the seven-furlong maiden with the 15/8 favourite West Of Eden which was ridden by Wayne Lordan. He made all the running to beat Joseph O'Brien’s 9/2 chance Seaxburh by a length and a half.

Mel Sheridan landed a third career success when taking the 13-furlong apprentice handicap on Peter Lawlor’s 9/2 shot Numidia.

The Oliver Donlon-owned eight-year-old led over a furlong out and battled well to hold John McConnell’s 9/4 chance Masego by a shorthead, adding to a last-time-out success at Bellewstown.

Paddy Twomey landed one of the big prizes on offer at the Curragh on Saturday where the four-year-old Moody impressed with an all-the-way victory in the Group 3 Al Shira’aa Racing Meadow Court Stakes.

Ridden by Billy Lee, she skipped clear over a furlong out to beat the William Haggas-trained 10/1 shot Rhapsody by three and a half lengths and a big step up in class awaits her in the weeks and months to come.
