'The cuckoo comes in April…’… The highlight of a dawn chorus event is to hear this iconic bird. Hopefully he’ll oblige on 10th May at Derryvella, Littleton.

Dawn Chorus in Tipp

Birdwatch Ireland is foremost in promoting biodiversity and the good of the environment in general.

Its experts are often consulted for advice and guidance. The Tipperary Branch of Birdwatch Ireland will celebrate this lovely month of May, full of growth, birdsong and flowers, with a dawn chorus event at Derryvella, Littleton, on Sunday, May 10 at 5am.

This lovely amenity provides a great variety of birds, plants, insects and mammals. If the birds oblige us with their songs, we hope to hear the usual garden birds and some migrants. To hear the cuckoo would be an extra bonus.

When the birds are quiet, we’ll look at the plants that grow on this cut-away bog. It’ll be a gentle amble around the ponds.

Non-members are especially welcome. There is no charge. Come along and find out why, how and when birds sing. Be awed by the nature on your doorstep.

Meet at car park at the pond at 5am. Derryvella is signposted right when coming from Littleton on the New Birmingham Road about 4km from the Protestant church. If coming from New Birmingham, it’s less than 3km from the village on the Littleton road to the left. Plenty of parking! Wear suitable weather gear and footwear. Binoculars would be a bonus.

Children with adults, please!
