Nenagh Library has a full programme of events celebrating this year's Bealtaine Festival and a quick glance at the festival programme will show that there is something for everyone during the month.

The national Bealtaine Festival is an initiative of Age and Opportunity and in Tipperary, the Tipperary Library Service and Arts Office is delighted to work with Tipperary ETB to provide our programme of events. ‘Kitchens Through Time’ - Vintage Electric Appliances Exhibition. Running from May 6 to 25. Curated by Bernard O'Connell, electrical and vintage appliance enthusiast, this exhibition revisits early timesaving electrical in Irish homes from the 1940s to the 1990s.
DIY Home Maintenance with Paul Carew – Thursdays, May 7, 14, 21 & 28 at 10.30am - 12.30pm. Four workshops covering practical skills including basic woodworking, painting and decorating, simple home repairs and upcycling. Designed to empower the individual, this hands-on course builds skills you can use at home. No experience needed.
Coiled Basket Making with Sharon Wells – Monday, May 11 at11am - 1pm. Enjoy a creative learning experience with this relaxed workshop offering a wonderful opportunity to learn an ancient craft, connecting with Ireland's heritage.
‘The Bass Player’ with Stephen Travers – Tuesday, May 12 at 6.30pm. Join us for a profoundly moving and timely talk by Stephen Travers, survivor of the 1975 Miami Showband Massacre. Stephen reflects on growing up in Tipperary, his adventures on the showband circuit and his remarkable journey of resilience following one of the darkest moments in Irish music history.
Native Wild Plants in Irish Culture - talk with Carol Doherty, medicinal herbalist. Wednesday, May 13 at 10.30am. Explore the role of native wild plants in Irish life, and of plant lore in Irish folklore and the Brehon laws. Traditional medicinal and cultural knowledge passed down through generations provides the basis for this inspiring event for anyone interested in heritage, nature, folklore and traditional wisdom.
‘Back in My Day’ - Reminiscing with Jimmy Duggan. Monday, May 18 at 11am Based on the project ‘Back in My Day’, former teacher Jimmy Duggan spends a morning chatting to members of the public, sharing memories and stories in a relaxed and warm environment.
‘Finding Tipperary and the 1926 Census’ – Tuesday, May 19 at 10.30am. Led by Tipperary Library Service Local Studies Librarian, Stephanie Woods, this session will guide participants through the 1926 census exploring local and family history in Tipperary and understanding how census records bring the past to life. This workshop is ideal for anyone interested in genealogy, local history or learning more about their local community.
‘Staying Safe and Smart Online’ – Tuesday, May 19 at 3pm. Join us for a practical and accessible workshop offering a guide to smartphones and IT security. Learn how to stay safe, protect your personal information and use your mobile phone with confidence. Perfect for beginners as well as those wanting to improve their digital know-how.
Film, ‘Death of the Banshee’ - The Story of Rural electrification in Ireland. Tuesday, May 19 at 6.30pm. Join us for a special presentation by Bernard O'Connell, featuring the Film ‘Death of the Banshee’, which tells the fascinating story of rural electrification in Ireland.
ALONE - May 20 at 11am. Talk by Gemma Forde from ALONE, the organisation supporting older people to age safely and confidently at home. Gemma will discuss the vital services ALONE provides and will also talk about the opportunities to volunteer with this worthwhile organisation.
Songs Of May and Summer with Jim Ryan (Jim O’ the Mills) and Cáit Ní Riain. Tuesday, May 26 6.30pm. This special father-daughter concert explores traditional Irish songs and poems of the season, celebrating May, summer and the turning of the seasons.
