Shock and sadness has been expressed locally over the death of Callum in a two-vehicle collision at Nutts Corner, Co Antrim, on Sunday morning. He was a Fifth Year student at Borrisokane Community College.
In a statement issued on Monday, the school said its Critical Incident Team had met to co-ordinate a response and to enact its Critical Incident Plan. “Our priority is the wellbeing and welfare of our students, parents/guardians and staff,” the statement read.
“Tipperary ETB and psychologists from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) have been supporting and advising the school in their efforts so that students are supported.
“We extend our deepest sympathies and prayers to all those affected, especially Callum’s family, friends and the wider school community at this very sad time.”
It is understood that Callum was a passenger in a VW Passat that collided with a VW Golf around 8am. Two other passengers in the car in which he was travelling were hospitalised. One of them is a 10-year-old boy, reportedly a cousin of Scarlett Faulkner, the woman who recently died following an alleged assault at Birdhill.
A special Mass was held at Corpus Cristi Church in Moyross, Limerick, on Tuesday, at which Callum was prayed for along with John and Christopher Faulkner, who were injured in the accident.
Tributes are being left on social media this week, one of them describing Callum as “a really kind-hearted soul. The nicest, most sincere young lad around town. An absolute credit to his parents, he was.”
Callum’s uncle Shane paid tribute to his “legend of a nephew”, who would remain “forever 16”.
An aunt, Mary-Ann O’Donoghue, said she would never get over the tragedy. “You’ve my heart shattered, Callum,” she wrote. “You were so harmless - the most loving respectful, caring boy you’d ever meet. A heart of pure gold. Not a bad bone in his body.
“If love could have saved you, you would have lived forever. God really does take the best.”
The driver of the Passat in which Callum was travelling received minor injuries in the crash. The driver of the other vehicle was arrested by the PSNI. Investigations into the incident are continuing.
