Move the Mast table quiz
Well-supported fundraising event in Cloughjordan
The Clough Inn in Cloughjordan was a lively scene on Friday, February 27, when dozens of locals gathered for a table quiz night hosted by the Cloughjordan Drama Group in aid of the local Move the Mast Action Group.
The event raised €1,281 towards legal fees for a judicial review of a 15m 5G Eir mast proposed to be erected inside Cloughjordan village directly adjacent to schools, homes, businesses and historical landmarks. Drama Group Director Seamus Costello acted as Master of Ceremonies at the quiz, and the pub was buzzing with participants young and old, who shared laughs, pints and donations – but not quiz answers! The competition was tough and it took three tie-breaking questions to declare a winning table.
Local businesses were generous with their donation of door prizes, and both the Cloughjordan Drama Group and Move the Mast Action Group expressed their gratitude to The Coachyard Garden Centre, Majella O’Connor Yoga, Santosha Massage, Gulan’s Takeaway, Sheelagh na Gig Bookshop, SportsPlus Physiotherapy & Rehabilitation, Margo Hough Pilates, and Forest School, Cloughjordan for the vouchers they donated.
“We’d like to thank the businesses who donated raffle prizes as well as the Clough Inn for letting us use their premises as a venue,” said Ger Cleary, chairman of the Cloughjordan Drama Group.
“The support from local business people has been remarkable.”
Longtime Drama Group member Bawney Hayes, also a member of the Move the Mast Action Group, said he was heartened and inspired by the further showing of support for the group’s efforts at the table quiz.
“The table quiz was well-attended and raised an amount that was beyond our expectations,” Mr Hayes said. “Cloughjordan has spoken clearly on this issue time and again: We will not accept a 5G mast inside our village, especially where other, more appropriate sites have not been sought. Cloughjordan came out in force for the table quiz, and we are grateful for the funding and support from our village.”
While €1,281 was raised on the night, a further €500 was donated online by Cloughjordan citizens not in attendance.
