What does heritage look like in 2026?
County Arms has announced the reopening of its newly renovated Moorpark Ballroom, unveiling a design concept that looks both to the past and the future of one of the Midlands’ most recognisable wedding venues.
Led by interior designer Susan McGowan of Ashen&Cloud, the project was developed around a central concept described as “heritage forward” – an approach that takes inspiration from the history of the building and the architectural heritage of Birr, while reinterpreting those influences for a new generation.
Drawing from the elegance of Georgian architecture, the renovation incorporates refined cornicing, panel details and ceiling elements that echo traditional craftsmanship while presenting them in a way that feels fresh, contemporary and relevant today.
As Susan explains, the guiding question behind the project was simple:
“What does heritage look like in 2026?”
The answer, she says, was to honour the architectural language of the past while reimagining its details for the future.
“This project is about bringing the heritage of the building forward to the next generation,” said Susan. “The inspiration came from Birr itself – its Georgian architecture, its sense of place and history. We wanted to reinterpret those elements in a way that feels refined and modern, while still clearly connected to the building’s history.”
A key part of the project was also its strong local focus. Much of the craftsmanship involved in the transformation was carried out by local craftsmen and fabricators, ensuring the renovation not only celebrates the heritage of the building, but also the talent and skill within the region.
For County Arms, the renovation reflects a continued commitment to offering couples a venue that combines timeless elegance with exceptional standards of hospitality.
Eoin Garry, owner of County Arms, said the refreshed ballroom continues the hotel’s long tradition of hosting weddings and celebrations with care and attention to detail.
“The Moorpark Ballroom has been part of so many important moments for couples and families across the region,” said Eoin. “This renovation allows us to honour that history while creating a space that feels elegant, welcoming and ready for the next generation of celebrations.”
According to Barry Kennedy, County Arms General Manager, “What hasn’t changed is our commitment to delivering the high standard of service and experience that couples expect when they celebrate their wedding with us.”.
The newly renovated Moorpark Ballroom will continue to host weddings, corporate events and celebrations, with bookings now open for the coming seasons.
For couples planning their wedding, the refreshed space offers a setting that combines heritage, craftsmanship and modern comfort, supported by the experienced wedding team at County Arms who guide couples through every stage of their celebration.
