Shane MacGowan tour on RTÉ

RTÉ Nationwide were in Tipperary recently to cover the Unravelling Shane tour, and a half-hour feature is being broadcast this Wednesday, March 18, at 7pm.

The Nationwide team visited the MacGowan murals in Nenagh, McKenna’s pub in Borrisokane, the Shannon Rovers GAA club in Ballinderry, of which MacGowan’s great-grandfather was first President and Chairman, and Kilbarron, MacGowan’s ancestral home parish where his mother went to school, his parents were married and where a monument now stands to him.

They also visited Cloughprior cemetery where many of MacGowan’s famous Lynch family are buried and Dromineer, one of the Shannon spots on the tour, immortalised in MacGowan’s classic song The Broad Majestic Shannon, as well as Shane’s favourite Nenagh bar, Philly Ryan’s.

A special part of the programme will feature an interview with Shane’s sister, Siobhán MacGowan, in the famous Lynch family cottage, which so inspired the young Shane and which he regarded as home. The cottage is private and not yet on the tour.

Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh and crew were driven in a tour bus supplied by Tipperary company, Arra Travel, whose first group guided tour will take place on Saturday, March 28, and every Saturday thereafter. Bookings can be made via the www.unravellingshane.com website.
