Michael Bannon erecting the sign on John’s Lane.

Sign for John’s Lane

As one heads from Lacey Avenue towards the Main Street in Templemore, the first house you will encounter on the right hand side of Bank Street will be the former Kennedy residence on what its deed says in 1815 is the East side of John Street.

We can only assume by now that this street takes its name after Sir John Craven Carden, the resident landlord of the day. Approximately 100mts up the street a left turn leads you directly onto John’s Lane where in the famine times there proudly stood 22 houses with many of the old families of Templemore living here, including familiar favourites such as Quinns, Larkins, Fogartys, Leahys, Mahers, Carrolls Griffins and Barrs.

By the time the Census of 1911 came around the records show roughly 40 people living in the lane. And famous old present-day characters like Paddy ‘The Rabbit’ Carroll can vividly recall other characters such as Nan Woodhams living in the houses when he was growing up as a child. Paddy can clearly recall the smoke billowing out the small front door.

It will be interesting to see what became of the lane when the 1926 Census is released in the coming weeks. The erection of this sign brings a final conclusion to the project, which was ran by Templemore Heritage Group, a sub committee of Templemore Community Development. Association.

We would like to thank both TCDA and Tipperary County Council for their continued support on this project over the last few years along with the support of the Bannon family in the recent erection of the sign.
