Death of local Defence Forces veteran
The death took place on February 24, of Vincent (Vincy) Barry, Shanakiel, Cork. Vincent passed away peacefully surrounded by his family and in the tender care of all the staff at Bríd Haven Nursing Home.
Born and raised in Portland, Lorrha, in 1948, Vincy was one of five children born to Maude and Denis. He attended Lorrha National School and went on to secondary in Borrisokane.
As a young man he joined the army and made Cork his home. He soon rose through the ranks and when he was appointed Sergeant he was stationed in Collins Barracks. He spent a large portion of his 28 years military service in the 4 Battalion. In the Defence Forces, Vincy was recognised as a capable and helpful leader. He assisted many 4 Battalion members on career courses in the Command Training Depot. Vincy made a valuable contribution on four overseas deployments. He served with 11 and 22 Infantry Groups, UNFICYP, Cyprus and 50 and 56 Irish Battalions in UNIFIL, South Lebanon. Vincy is fondly remembered by colleagues from the 4 Battalion and all Units in Collins Barracks who served with him.
When he retired, Vincent took up bus driving and also volunteered in his spare time to give training classes to young men and women who were joining the army.
He loved visiting home and catching up with his old Lorrha friends whenever he had time to do so.
Vincent was pre-deceased by his wife Mary, he was a loving dad to Charlotte, Jackie, Anne, Junior, Pamela and Denis, brother of Anne, Joan and the late Kevin and Denis.
Sadly missed by all his children, sons-in-law Kieran, Denis, Frank and Pat, daughter-in-law Roisin, brothers-in-law, sister-in-law, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family and a wide circle of friends to whom sympathy is extended.
After Funeral Mass on February 26 in St Michael’s Garrison Church, Collins Barracks, Old Youghal Road, Cork burial took place in St Catherine’s Cemetery, Kilcully. May his soul rest in peace
