Coast Guard responds to local incidents
On Saturday, February 21, Killaloe Coast guard unit was tasked to an incident at the Two-Mile-Gate area, at 4.35pm, and was joined by Killaloe Fire and Rescue, the National Ambulance Service and An Garda Síochána. The incident was resolved.
At 7pm on Wednesday, February 24, the unit was tasked to assist a vessel stuck in strong currents at Killaloe Bridge. The 28-foot sailboat, with one person on board, was pinned to the navigation buoys on the northern side of the bridge with strong currents making it impossible for the skipper to manoeuvre his vessel.
A boat crew launched from the Pier Head and the crew went down river south of the bridge and guided the rescue boat back against the strong currents until it was alongside the casualty vessel. The skipper on board was safe and well and wearing a life jacket. A coast guard crew member was transferred on board and a tow line was set up. The vessel was taken on tow to safety where a shore team assisted in the safe mooring of the vessel north of Killaloe Bridge.
