Nenagh hosts successful Veterans Open Tennis Tournament

Veteran tennis players from all provinces came to Nenagh last weekend for the local club’s ‘Masters Tour 1000’ tennis tournament. Nenagh Abbey Court Hotel were the exclusive sponsors of what is now a major tournament on the Tennis Ireland veteran calendar.

Upwards of 276 players competed across a range of events from Over 30 up to Over 75 years, delivering lots of high quality tennis and it’s a positive for the standard of tennis in Nenagh to be able to report that local players did very well.

The full results are available on the Tennis Ireland Tournament Software system. From a local perspective, we complement Philip O’Gorman who won both of his events, the singles against David Brophy (Abbeyleix) and he joined fellow Nenagh clubman, Matthew Ryan, to win the equivalent doubles title.

It was a good weekend for Darcy family, with Ruth winning her singles category, just about getting the better of Aine Murphy (also Nenagh), while Ruth’s sisters, Anne-Marie and Helena, won their doubles category.

Deirdre McSherry again proved superior, winning her singles event, while Wilmer’s Chris Collins won the equivalent men’s singles event. Annette Mason (Killaloe-Ballina) was also in top form, winning her mixed category with Alan McCormack.

Nenagh’s Catriona Gleeson was in two finals, winning her ladies doubles category with Ann Milne (Birr Wilmer), and then securing a runner-up spot, with Michael McDonnell, in the equivalent mixed event.

Frank O’Keeffe was edged out 7/10 in the tie-break decider in his singles final. Other Nenagh results included a doubles final appearance by Michael Kennedy, playing with David McDowell (Irvinestown, and father of Nenagh joint club captain Kathy), and Shane Williams & James Brophy who were doubles finalists in their category.
