Study Skills Workshop

Our Sixth and Third Year students enjoyed a Study Skills workshop with Anna Stafford of Inspire Education this week. Students had the opportunity to learn about study strategies such as mind mapping, flashcards, Cornell note taking, and the ‘power hour’.

They were reminded that study is a skill, and takes practice, and that the brain loves repetition! Active methods of studying material rather than just reading are very effective; methods such as making your own notes, underlining and highlighting key points, and reciting material aloud. Associating information with a picture/drawing is also highly effective.

Another key takeaway is to leave your phone in another room while you study. Phones occupy our mental space even when face down on a desk or in our bag, draining precious cognitive reserves we could be using for study.

Anna discussed the importance of taking breaks every day also and switching off from school and study, staying hydrated and getting a good night's sleep, messages we always reinforce for our students here in the CBS.

This time of the academic year between the November tests and the mock exams is a great time to avail of a study skills session, being six months out from the state exams. Students are keen to learn new techniques to incorporate into their study schedules.

We wish students all the best for the coming weeks and months. Keep showing up, asking questions, and giving your best! Thanks to our Guidance Counsellor, Ms Helen O'Connor, for organising these Study Skills workshops for our state exam students.

TY Enterprise Christmas Market

The annual TY Enterprise Christmas Market took place in the Abbey Court Hotel. The students have been working with their teachers over the last few months on creating a product or service for market day. Some great ideas and true entrepreneurial spirit were on display. Thank you to their teachers Mr Miller, Ms Gleeson and Ms Young for all their guidance with the students.

Well done to ‘Classy Fragrances’ who were voted the winners by Shane Creamer from Tipperary Enterprise Board. The entrepreneurial group created different fragrance scents, marketed as a product that is great for when you need to freshen up as it is small and can be stored on your person. This group progress to the Tipperary finals in March. Thank you also to the Abbey Court Hotel for hosting the event.
