Hurling development continues in St Mary’s Newport
GAA: Munster Post Primary Schools Under 17 ‘C’ Hurling Final

In their best performance this year, St Mary’s Secondary School Newport, led by captains Kion Quigley and Oisin Kennedy, powered their way to the Munster PPS Under 17 ‘C’ Hurling title beating Clonakilty Community College in Banteer.
St Mary’s started the game well, settling into the contest to lead by 0-6 to 0-1 after fifteen minutes, with scores coming from Ollie Roche frees and Cormac Ryan.
Clonakilty and clawed St Mary’s back to a two point deficit by the 25th minute before Cormac Ryan got in behind the full back and struck a great goal into the top corner to leave the half time score 1-7 to 0-5 in favour of St Mary’s.
The second half began in similar vein to the first, with Clonakilty and St Mary’s trading early scores before the West Cork side hit a purple patch to bring themselves back to within one score.
St Mary’s began to ring the changes with Bobby O’Riordan and Tom McCabe coming on as half time subs. James Ryan struck for a nice point to settle St Mary’s again before Kion Quigley struck for their second goal. Tom McCabe quickly followed up with the third goal to settle the contest.
Subs JJ Roche set up another point, with Joe O’Brien coming into the half back line to replace the tremendous Ronan O’Mahony. St Mary’s saw the game out strongly keeping a very brave Clonakilty at bay.
St Mary’s were very worthy winners, with excellent performances across the field from Aaron Lane, Oisin Kennedy, Ronan Gaffrey, Ronan O’Mahony, Darragh Healy, and Ollie Roche.
