Busy times at Newport College

Art Trip

Our Second Year art students enjoyed a trip to Limerick City to visit the People's Museum of Limerick where one of our students, Jake Byrnes, has a piece of art on show as part of the Dóchas Midwest Art Exhibition. This was followed by a visit to the Limerick City Art Gallery as part of their art studies in preparation for upcoming projects.

Transition Year Trips

Transition Year students travelled to the Apprenticeship Careers Showcase in the Radisson Blue Hotel in Limerick during the week where they had the chance to quiz local professionals on their experiences with the apprenticeship programme. Students quizzed the experts to find out how to access these pathways as well as learning hints and tips on how to succeed in Apprenticeships.

Following on from this, they also travelled to the Limetree Theatre in Mary Immaculate College to unwind and experience the comedy of Ger Carey. Students were shown a reflection of their own lives in his show ‘Psycho Spaghetti: A comic journey inside a teenage mind’. Students really enjoyed the show and would recommend it for all students their age.

Study Skills Seminars

Following on from their Midterm exams, students from Third and Sixth Year were treated to a study skills seminar on Monday. Having sat their tests under exam conditions, students were eager to gain further insight into the best ways to prepare for future assessments and found great benefit from the event.

Enterprise Workshops

Tina from the Local Enterprise Board came in to run an enterprise workshop with TYs and some junior classes from the enterprise club. With so much interest from students, we surely have some budding entrepreneurs in the group!

Stand Up Awareness Week

As part of Stand Up Week, the Student Council hosted a vibrant nail-painting activity during lunchtime. It was fantastic to see so many students take part and show their support for inclusivity and acceptance within our school community. Students also enjoyed colourful and healthy snacks provided by the Home Economics Department, with the wonderful help of some of our LCA1 students.

Later in the week, students were asked to dress in their most colourful clothes for a non-uniform day to help raise money for the LGBTQ+ charity. Throughout the week, thanks to the Student Council, the pride flag flew high to highlight support for the LGBTQ+ community and Newport College’s support for Stand-Up Week.

U19 Hurling

Our U19 hurlers progress to the Munster Development Semi Final, after a good win over St John Bosco, Kildysart. Thanks to the boys for their efforts and a special thank you to our feeder clubs for their continued support.
