Minister praises forward-thinking ethos at Our Lady’s
Our Lady’s Secondary School, Templemore, had the honour of welcoming the Minister of State for Special Education and Inclusion, Mr Michael Moynihan, on Thursday, November 6.
The minister, accompanied by Ryan O'Meara, TD and members of his delegation, was warmly received by Principal Mr Paul Fogarty, Deputy Principal Ms Martina Butler, and senior members of the Student Council. During his visit, Minister Moynihan was given a guided tour of the school, where he explored many of the excellent facilities available to students. He met with a broad range of pupils, including those attending the school’s special classes, and gained valuable insight into the inclusive educational practices that have been central to Our Lady’s ethos for more than four decades.
Minister Moynihan commended the school for its forward-thinking approach, noting that the decision to amalgamate in 1985 was particularly progressive at a time when school amalgamations were uncommon. He praised both the architectural extension of the building and the way in which the school has preserved its historical identity while embracing modern design and educational innovation.
The minister also commented on the harmonious blending of the old and the new, describing the school as a bright, welcoming, and vibrant learning environment. He expressed admiration for the school’s facilities and atmosphere, highlighting them as a reflection of Our Lady’s enduring commitment to excellence and inclusivity.
During his tour, Minister Moynihan was particularly impressed by the engineering and artistic talents of the students, referencing the striking dragon prop created for the school’s production of Shrek: The Musical. He commended the creativity and skill of both mainstream and special class students, praising their enthusiasm and pride in their work.
In addition to his focus on inclusivity and innovation, Minister Moynihan also acknowledged Our Lady’s rich sporting tradition, referencing the school’s Harty Cup victories in 1978 and 2017. He noted with admiration that until 2022, Our Lady’s had been the only mixed school ever to win the prestigious competition, a testament to the school’s exceptional sporting spirit and teamwork.
The visit served to highlight Our Lady’s long-standing reputation as a forward-thinking, inclusive, and high-achieving school - one where every student is encouraged and empowered to reach their full potential.
