Gardaí were stopping traffic on the Dublin Road at Lisboney, Nenagh, to check for unlicensed hackney operators in the area.

Clampdown on unlicensed hackneys

The suspected widespread operation of unlicensed hackney services in Nenagh has promoted a multi-agency investigation aimed at wiping out the illegal practice.

A joint operation involving several compliance officers from the National Transport Authority, members of An Garda Síochána, Social Welfare and Revenue Inspectors was implemented in Nenagh on Friday week last.

Gardaí said the purpose of the operation was to investigate, prosecute and to eradicate the illegal provision of unlicensed hackney services to the public by unlicensed drivers and vehicles.

Gardaí said Revenue and Social Welfare inspectors are “keenly interested” in the operators who engage in such activity.

The gardaí said illegal operators were causing significant challenges for licensed drivers in the sector who are trying to earn an income.

“Unlicensed drivers and vehicles are causing serious financial and reputational damage to the licensed operators in the North Tipperary area,” the gardaí stated.

They pointed out that licensed operators must pay significant costs to remain offering valid and certifiable service which they operate.

Costs included much higher premiums for insurance and valid operators also have to pay to acquire and renew a plate licence.

Gardaí said licensed operators also regularly pay to have their vehicle tested for suitability to carry persons for hire and reward.

They said there were possible serious implications for people who avail of unlicensed services. “The passengers using the illegal operators should be mindful that they are most likely uninsured as passengers in these unlicensed vehicles.”

The multi-agency clampdown in Nenagh was launched as gardaí  suspect “multiple suspected breaches” of the Taxi Regulations Act in the town and surrounding areas.

As a result of the probe, the suspected illegal operators are now facing possible serious consequences.

“Court prosecution files will be prepared, and it is envisaged that prosecutions will ensue,” said the gardaí.

The Nenagh operation is one of many ongoing investigations targeting illegal operators nationally.

Inspector Aiden Lonergan of Nenagh Garda Station said the operation demonstrates a desire by the authorities to see that the members of the public using hackney services do so with reassurance that  vehicles and drivers meet all the necessary requirements to ensure safety and comfort of their passengers.
