Tipperary Racing Scene
Nathan Crosse played his part as Willie McCreery landed back-to-back winners in the opening two races at Down Royal.
Billy Lee gave the trainer his first success on the 5/1 chance Love Bomb in the five-furlong nursery handicap and Crosse followed up when partnering Navy Waters to take the 13-furlong fillies’ handicap.
Owned and bred by Miceal Sammon, the 18/5 shot came through to lead inside the distance to beat Natalia Lupini’s Alba Chiara by a length and a half.
9/2 chance Smiling won the seven-furlong maiden for three-year-olds for Aidan O'Brien and Wayne Lordan. She led over a furlong out and raced clear to win by four lengths from Ger Lyons’ odds-on favourite Diego El Queso.
Sam Coen scored a four and a quarter-length win in the seven-furlong handicap on the Natalia Lupini-trained Bishopton.
The 5/2 favourite readily added to his maiden success at Dundalk in August when racing clear inside the final furlong to beat Noel Meade’s Port Louis in fine style.
The two-year-old Tornado Kiss was a winner for Andy & Andrew Slattery at Cork on Tuesday.
A runner-up on each of her first two starts, the Rathbarry Stud-bred 8/11 favourite comfortably landed the five-furlong maiden when getting the better of the Ross O'Sullivan-trained Bad Boy Rizz by half a length.
The Slattery’s lost out as the Ben Coen-ridden Nakamura made all the running to beat their Cisterna in the six-furlong nursery handicap.
Owned by the Brunabonne Syndicate, the Johnny Murtagh-trained 9/2 chance made all the running and went clear well inside the final furlong to win by two and a quarter lengths from Cisterna.
The Goffs Million-winning combination of Aidan O'Brien and Jack Cleary landed the eight-furlong fillies’ maiden for two-year-olds with Bloom at Cork on Tuesday.
A 5/1 chance, she made light of a stumble inside the final furlong to beat the Cormac Farrell-trained 25/1 shot Ifweonlyhavelove by half a length.
Denis Hogan and Joey Sheridan landed a double at Bellewstown on Wednesday with horses owned by James McAuley.
The trio were up and running when the three-year-old Just Jump scored a comfortable win in the eight-furlong optional claiming maiden.
The 3/1 chance led over a furlong out to beat Kieran Cotter’s Late Night Talking by a length and a half.
6/1 chance Nezeeh completed the double when narrowly taking the five-furlong handicap. Again, leading over a furlong from home, the four-year-old saw off the challenge of Eamon Delany’s favourite Escaping The Jungle to record his fourth win of the season.
Sam Curling recorded his own double when Phillip Enright and Sean O'Keeffe rode winners at Clonmel on Thursday.
Qunneofthelodge, owned by the Sink Or Swim Syndicate, scored for the trainer and Enright when easily taking the two and a half-mile mares’ handicap hurdle.
The 5/1 co-favourite led after the third-last hurdle and was clear between the last two to win by four and three-parts of a length from Pat Foley’s Colleen Danu.
O’Keeffe had to work a little harder for his success on the five-year-old Sallap in the near three-mile handicap hurdle to complete the Curling double.
He brought the Willie Cleary-owned 14/1 chance from off the pace to lead before the second-last hurdle to beat Liz Doyle’s Great Bird by three-parts of a length.
Seven-year-old Royal Hollow recorded her fourth career win when landing the two-mile mares’ hurdle for trainer Andy Slattery at Gowran Park on Friday.
Owned and bred by Margaret O’Rourke, the Cian Quirke-ridden 3/1 chance led at the second-last hurdle and was well on top when beating Colin Bowe’s even money favourite The Great Nudie by three and a quarter lengths.
Two more winners for Aidan O'Brien at the Curragh on Saturday saw Wayne Lordan reach the half-century mark for the tenth time in his career.
The pair took the seven-furlong maiden for two-year-olds with the gambled-on 11/8 favourite Causeway which beat Jessica Harrington’s Iron Lily by two and a quarter lengths and followed up straight way as the 5/4 favourite Cameo beat her own stable companion Together Now by the same margin in the two-year-old fillies’ maiden over the same distance.
Lordan first rode 50 winners in a season in 2005 and his highest total, to date, of 57, came in 2013.
Sam Coen added to his winner at Down Royal with a double.
He won the eight-furlong apprentice handicap on Andy Slattery’s 4/1 chance Highbury See See, owned by Hugo McDermott, which beat Willie McCreery’s favourite Great Mover by a head.
Coen then made most of the running to take the six-furlong handicap on the Tom McCourt-trained Smoke Them Out.
Owned in partnership by the trainer’s wife Pauline and Stephen Sweeney, the 7/1 chance held off Pat Flynn’s Key Witness by three-parts of a length.
Fethard amateur Jessica Stokes partnered her first winner when taking the 12-furlong lady riders’ handicap on the Tim Doyle-trained Alfalfa.
Owned and bred by Claire Doyle, the 13/2 shot came from well off the pace and collared the Harry Rogers-trained Gotta Catch’em All close to the line to win by a length and a quarter.
Nathan Crosse rounded off the day when winning the eight-furlong handicap on the Danny McLoughlin-trained Syzygy.
The 12/1 chance also came from off the pace but she led over a furlong out and held on to beat the Paul Sweeney-trained God Knows by a head.
Wayne Hassett and Joseph O'Brien won the two-year-old maiden over nine-furlongs with the newcomer Shosholoza at Tipperary on Sunday.
Owned by the trainer’s mother Anne Marie, the 10/1 chance was well on top as he led over a furlong out to beat his own stable companion Acclamatic by five and a half lengths.
Joe Murphy and Ben Coen took the handicap over the same distance with the 12/1 chance Grey Leader, owned by Tony Auld. The five-year-old led early in the straight and came home three and a quarter lengths clear of Kevin Coleman’s odds-om favourite Akecheta with Murphy’s 5/1 shot Immutable back in third place.
Paddy Twomey came to the rescue of punters as his 100/30 favourite Deepone scored a facile success in the Listed Coolmore Sioux Nation Concorde Stakes over seven and a half furlongs.
Ridden by Billy Lee, the four-year-old made much of the running to beat Joe Murphy’s Lord Massusus by nine lengths.
