Fundraiser for Ormond Special Olympics

Transition Year students from St Mary’s Secondary School in Nenagh recently arranged a scavenger hunt and a bake sale as fundraisers for the local Ormond Special Olympics Sports Club (OSOSC).

Over €500 was raised from the events, and this was presented by Transition Year student, Anna Paxman, to OSOSC athlete and former St Mary’s student Fiona McKennedy, accompanied by committee member Jean D’Arcy, athletics coach, Pauline Nugent, and volunteer Paul Nugent.

OSOSC is affiliated to the registered charity, Special Olympics Ireland and has provided Athletics Training and Competition opportunities for children and adults with special needs throughout North Tipperary for over 20 years.

Club athletes have been competing for places in the Munster Special Olympics Athletics Team, with finals day held at MTU Cork last Saturday. Based upon their results, local athletes will hope to progress to gain places in The Ireland Squad which will be travelling to Chile, South America for the Special Olympics World Games in 2027.

OSOSC has a membership of over 20 athletes and trains weekly throughout the year with the support of Nenagh College, Nenagh Éire Óg GAA Club, Templemore Athletics Club and Moyne Athletics Track.

Membership secretary, Jean D’Arcy, said: “Our club is entirely self-funded and relies on the generosity and thoughtfulness of groups like St Mary’s School TY Students. We are extremely grateful to St Mary’s School, and to Anna Paxman and her fellow TY students for all their hard work and kindness.”
