Tipperary suffered a second defeat in a row in the new All-Ireland Under 23 Championship following a comprehensive defeat at the hands of Cork on Saturday.

The visitors dominated from start to finish as their extra experience shown through and was a very harsh lesson for a very young Tipperary side to have to learn, as they were outclassed from first to last whistle.

Cork suffocated the Tipperary side, giving them no time on the ball and forcing them to hit wayward clearances, which the visitors defence won with ease. While at the other end the Cork forwards were able to find space with ease and played some superb camogie throughout.

A defeat like this can either make or break a team, especially one as young as this Tipp side, who will now have to try and bounce back ahead of a trip to Waterford next Saturday as they look for their first win of the championship.

The Premier County would get off to the better start when after a minute and forty-two seconds they were ahead following an excellent finish from Aoife Dwyer, but the lead would only last a matter of moments, when straight from the puckout, midfielder Rose Murphy made a super catch, before slotting over.

The Rebelettes would then go on a scoring spree, the first of many in the game, with Amy Sheppard pointing a free, which was followed by a point each from Niamh McNabola and Isobel Sheehan, before Sheppard pointed another free in the tenth minute.

A minute later, the home side responded through a Grace Moloney point from a tight angle. Five minutes would pass before the next score when Orlaith Mullins added another for the away side following a super ball in from Rose Murphy.

Two Aoife Dwyer points, one from a free, left the score at 0-6 to 0-3 after nineteen minutes.

But once again, Cork upped their game for the final twelve minutes of the half, hitting six unanswered points, as Tipp really struggled to get near the Munster champions. McNabola knocked over the first, before two frees from Sheppard, which were followed by points from Orlaith Mullins and Isobel Sheehan, before another dead-ball by Sheppard.

Tipp responded with a score deep in injury time through an Aoife Dwyer free to leave the score at the break 0-12 to 0-4 in favour of Cork.

Any chance of a Tipp comeback in the second half was quickly put to bed by a blistering Cork start, as they hit 2-4 without reply. Points from Isobel Sheehan and Claudia Keane opened the scoring, before Keane, following a fine ball into her, turned her marker and smashed the ball into the back of the net.

Rose Murphy then hit two in a row, the first a fine effort following a catch and run. Cork’s second goal came in the 43rd minute from an Amy Sheppard penalty.

Tipp opened their account for the half in the 45th minute from an Aoife Dwyer free, but Cork responded straight from the puckout with Claudia Keane pointing.

And from the puckout, Cork won the ball and worked the sliotar into Keane who saw her initial shot well saved by Tipp keeper Aine Slattery, only for the rebound to fall to Sheppard who buried to the back of the net for her second, and her sides third goal.

The home side responded with two points, the first a superb score by Danielle Ryan following a great catch, run and finish, then Aoife Dwyer added another from a free.

Orlaith Mullins added another free for Cork, before Ciara Shelly hit Tipp’s final score of the game in the 54th minute.

The match would rather peter out, but Cork would fittingly have the final say in added time with Mullins adding another free to leave her side victorious by twenty points.
