Tipperary Clubs to meet over Skorts motion

By Shane Brophy

Tipperary Camogie Board will hold a scheduled county board meeting this evening (Wednesday) with the Special Congress motion on whether to allow shorts to be worn set to be high on the agenda.

All forty clubs in the county have been encouraged to poll their players in advance of the meeting from which a consensus will be formed on how the county will vote on the motion at Special Congress at Croke Park on Thursday, May 22nd.

Considering there was unanimous support from clubs in the county to permanently remove the skort ahead of a vote at 2024 Congress which garnered 39% support, it would be expected that Tipperary will back the motion for players to be, at least, given the option of wearing skorts or shorts.

A Special Congress was called late last week to consider motion(s) to provide all players with the choice to wear skorts or shorts while playing camogie.

The decision on whether this motion is adopted will rest with the Congress delegates (delegates represent all members of the Association including all of players).

The Camogie Association had proposed to deal with this issue at next year’s Congress but following considerable player disquiet and public blow back, the Association recognised that waiting until 2026 is not acceptable.

Although similar motions did not pass at the 2024 Congress, the Association in a statement said it “is committed to representing the voices of players who wish to have a choice in their playing attire”.

If the motion(s) passes, the new rule(s) - allowing the option to wear skorts or shorts - would take effect from May 24th, 2025, when the group stages of the All-Ireland Championships take place, including Tipperary hosting All-Ireland champions Cork.

The Camogie Association also confirmed that a working group, established to examine the comfort, fit, design and overall performance of playing wear, will remain in place and continue to engage with players at all levels across the country.

Commenting on the updated position Uachtarán of the Camogie Association Brian Molloy said: "Our goal is to deliver, as quickly as possible, a best-in-class playing uniform designed for female players and allowing for individual choice.”
