Nenagh AFC 3-3 Evergreen (AET, Evergreen win 3-1 on pens)

Nenagh AFC suffered the heartbreak of a penalty shootout exit in the fourth round of the FAI Junior Cup at Brickfields on Sunday, after playing out a 3-3 draw with Kilkenny side Evergreen.

The defeat was more heartfelt after Nenagh seemed to have snatched victory from defeat with an injury time equaliser.

However, despite playing most of the game with ten men, the visitors kept their nerve to progress. Former international Dave Grincell put the visitors ahead with a tap in on the half hour mark.

Three minutes later, Matt O’Gorman levelled for the home side converting Dylan Morrison’s delivery into the box.

Evergreen were reduced to ten men when Mikey Clifford saw red but still gained the lead when former professional Mikey Drennan headed in from a set-piece.

Just before the break, Nenagh keeper Carl Williams denied Grincell a second when he saved his spot kick.

Evergreen dug in and looked like they would hold on but in the 93rd minute goalkeeper Carl Williams came forwards and powerfully headed the equaliser.

Ryan Gilmartin put Nenagh ahead in extra time with a shot from the edge of the box but they were unable to hold on as the visitors performed their last gasp rally with Drennan scoring to ensure penalties - where the visitors proved more accurate.

Newport Town picked up their first point of the season in a 1-1 draw with fellow strugglers Carew Park at Derryleigh Park on Sunday.

The Tipperary side looked to have the three points in the bag as they led three minutes into injury time.

Christy Doyle scored on 27 minutes when he headed home at the front post from Cillian O’Shea’s corner kick delivery.

Just before the break Carew Park through Jonathan Moran and Jamie Cross were denied by the post and shortly after the restart the frame again came to the home side’s rescue.

With time virtually up Logan O’Byrne scored from a spot kick to ensure a share of the spoils.
