Local winners pile up over the last seven days
Ridden by Amy Jo Hayes for trainer Tim Doyle, Pink Socks won the eight-furlong apprentice handicap at Gowran Park on Bank Holiday Monday last.
Owned and bred by the trainer’s wife Claire, the five-year-old came from well off the pace and led inside the final furlong to win by three-parts of a length from the Prunella Dobbs-trained Engines On, a deserved first success having finished runner-up on four previous occasions, three of them at Gowran Park.
Carrick-on-Suir trainer Kevin Coleman and champion jockey Colin Keane combined to take the concluding nine and a half-furlong handicap for three-year-olds with La Juliana. Owned by Atomic Racing, the 13.2 shot came with a late run from a little off the pace to lead close to the finish to beat Gavin Cromwell’s Mountarde by three-parts of a length.
Templemore’s Lesley Young won the opening two-mile mares’ maiden hurdle at Listowel on Bank Holiday Monday with the Sean O'Keeffe-ridden Cappacurry Ealu.
An 8/1 chance, the Tom Treacy and Seanie O'Connell-owned six-year-old was left in the lead when the front-running Russellsbelle fell at the final hurdle and came home two and a quarter lengths clear of Gordon Elliott’s Magic Dawn.
Sam Curling and Pa King won the three-mile hunters’ chase with Jeremy Pass which runs in the Cashel trainer’s own colours. The nine-year-old made all the running to beat Enda Bolger’s odds-on favourite Early Doors by a length and three-parts.
Aidan O'Brien shared winners with Ryan Moore and Wayne Lordan at the Curragh on Wednesday. Moore took the six-furlong winners’ race on the strong odds-on favourite Tunbridge Wells which had a little in hand when beating the Gavin Cromwell-trained Mighty Eriu by two and three-parts of a length.
The Lordan-ridden 13/2 chance Grateful edged out his own stable companion and odds-on favourite Mother Nature, ridden by Ryan Moore, by a shorthead to complete the Ballydoyle double in the 12-furlong fillies’ maiden.
Andy Slattery and his son Andrew scored a deserved success with the Damien Moore-owned Ojw Legacy. A runner-up on her three previous starts and twice placed third before that, the 2/1 favourite led inside the final furlong to beat Ger Lyons’ Yefimenko by half a length.
There were two more winners for Aidan O'Brien at Leopardstown on Thursday and again both were ridden by Wayne Lordan and Ryan Moore. For the second night running, Lordan got the better of a Ballydoyle odds-on shot as he won the two-year-old fillies’ maiden over the extended seven furlongs on 5/1 chance Bedtime Story. The daughter of Frankel had loads in hand as she beat her odds-on favourite stable companion Giselle by a length and a quarter.
Moore then completed the O'Brien double in the Listed King George V Cup which he won on favourite Portland. The three-year-old led a furlong from the finish and edged out Jessica Harrington’s Kinesiology by a neck.
The Galway Girl Syndicate-owned Timourid landed the nine-furlong handicap for Joey Sheridan and Longford trainer Paul Flynn. The seven-year-old led early in the straight and battled well to see off Dermot Weld’s favourite Livio Milo by half a length.
Aidan O'Brien and Wayne Lordan shared a winner for the third night running when the newcomer Easy Mover landed the opening six-furlong maiden for two-year-olds at Fairyhouse on Friday.
She headed the Emmet Mullins front-runner Peregrine Falcon close to the line and held on to beat Ado McGuinness’ Canto Della Terra by a head.
Ben Coen and trainer Johnny Murtagh won the 12-furlong handicap with Natural Ruler. He led in the final strides to pip the Donnacha O'Brien-trained joint-favourite Lady Doris by a neck.
The eight-year-old Barbaha Queen was a winner for trainer John Ryan and amateur rider David Doyle at Clonmel on Friday.
In Ryan’s own colours, the well-supported 9/2 chance came from off the pace to lead at the second-last fence and she kept on strongly to beat the Thomas O'Connor-trained Kadys Dirha by two and a half lengths.
Both Ryan and jockey Shane Fitzgerald landed a second success at the meeting when Kilashee won the concluding two-mile seven-furlong handicap chase. The Bitview Partnership-owned 11/1 chance made all the running and came home a length and a quarter to the good over his own stable companion Father Jed, ridden by Gavin Brouder.
Jake Coen rode his second winner over fences and joined his brother Ben as a winner on the day when taking the near three-mile beginners' chase on the Gordon Elliott-trained Sea Aster. A 7/2 chance in the colours of the Around The Fire Syndicate, the six-year-old was clear from the second-last fence as she beat Harry Rogers’ Clifftop by eight lengths.
Aidan O'Brien brought his tally for the week to eight winners with a treble at Navan on Saturday. Again, it was Wayne Lordan and Ryan Moore who rode his winners with the Cork man winning the opening five-furlong maiden for two-year-olds on Celtic Chieftain which led inside the final furlong to beat Michael O'Callaghan’s favourite Red Evolution by a neck. Ryan Moore’s mount, Alfred Tennyson, could only finish in fifth place but the jockey went on to complete the trainer’s treble on odds-on favourite Everlasting in the Listed fillies’ race and on favourite Old Faithful in the 10-furlong handicap, O'Brien’s 40th winner in Ireland this season.
Thurles amateur rider Susie Doyle recorded her third racecourse success as she took the lady riders’ handicap hurdle at Punchestown on Sunday on the 10-year-old Sargent Lightfoot.
A 7/1 chance for trainer Adrian Murray, he skipped a few lengths clear at the final hurdle and scored by three-parts of a length from the Shane Nolan-trained Missus Beeton.
