Musical show comes to stage
With a touch of spring in the air, a romantic musical theme and some fine renderings of Abba numbers is poised to hit the local stage at the weekend.
Newport Musical Society have chosen the dual theme of ‘First Dates’ and ‘Abba Gold’ for their 2024 production, which opens at the Community Centre, Newport on this Friday night, March 22 and runs through to Sunday night.
The large cast includes many fine vocalists rendering such popular numbers as ‘It's Not Unusual’, ‘Love Changes Everything’, 'Scarlet Ribbons' and ‘I Will Survive’ during part one of the show, while many of the popular Abba numbers dominate the second part.
This year’s show themes the local matchmaker based on the TV format of First Dates and opens in a cabaret dating club setting.
However not everything goes smoothly as the health inspector finds a problem in the kitchen and is threatening to close down the club, but the lonely sole will relent if the matchmaker can find him a suitable date.
Meantime an American billionaire returns to Ireland in an effort to woo back his fiancée who jilted him at the altar in Las Vegas when another lady turned up to object to the wedding.
In order to impress his date he has booked several guest artists, including Michael Ball, Tom Jones, Elton John and Shirley Bassey to serenade his ‘love’ but again, as they say, ‘true love never runs smoothly’ and the plan does not go as intended, which complicates the situation for him.
The second part of the show is ‘Abba Gold’, a selection of the most popular numbers in celebration of 50 years since ABBA won the Eurovision with Waterloo.
The show opens at 7.30pm each night, Friday, Saturday and Sunday for a colourful and entertaining production.
