Newport rally to win Munster title

GAA: TUS Munster Post Primary Schools Senior ‘D’ Hurling Final

St. Mary's SS, Newport 3-15

Mungret CC 3-13

Report: Dara Kennedy in UL

St Mary’s Secondary School Newport were crowned Munster Post Primary Schools Senior ‘D’ Hurling champions after seeing off rivals Mungret Community College in an exciting final last Friday.

Deferred on a number of occasions, the pushed back date meant anticipation was high for both players and supporters on both sides.

Mungret were quickly off the mark with a point in the first minute, but it didn't take Newport long to respond with a goal by Brian Tobin.

The teams traded scores in the first half but two more Newport goals from joint-captain Shane Flanagan and Darren Collopy meant that Newport went in at the break with the slightest of margins, 3-5 to 2-7.

The second half was a very tight affair and a Mungret goal gave them a four point lead with twelve minutes to go. Colm Kennedy scored two huge points from inside his own half to narrow the deficit to two points. The final minutes were very tense as Newport edged in front before a final point from Brian Tobin secured the win for St. Mary's Newport as they were crowned Munster Champions.

The cup was accepted by joint captains Colm Kennedy and Shane Flanagan.
