New wall in Portroe

The village of Portroe is undergoing a transformation at present with a scheme of new social housing almost complete and the building of a lovely natural stone wall along the side of the main street.

The wall is being built by Toomevara contractor Mike Murphy with the help of local men Aidan

McGrath and Kyle Shannon.

The new stonework stands perfectly in the centre of the village against the Arra and Silvermines mountains in the background.

A little plaque inserted in the wall with the words ‘Sal’s Lane’ is a harp back to former times when a laneway of that name was a popular spot for counting couples. Many older people living in the village recall a former wall in the locality being a good place for residents and visitors to park their bicycles.

Lands owned by local farmer Mick Sullivan were needed for the construction of the new wall and residents wish to thank him for all his cooperation.

No doubt the beautiful and sturdy wall will stand the test of time and will still be standing when all reading this story will have passed on.

New footpath are also being put down on either side of the main street as part of the enhancement works in the village.
