O’Dwyer hat-trick inspires Burgess to League success

Burgess won the County Under 17 ‘B’ Hurling Cross-Division League final after defeating Cahir in a high scoring game in Boherlahan last Wednesday.

The North division side were two points up inside the first ninety seconds with Paul Cahalan on target from a free and from play. Cahir replied with a free from Patrick McDonagh in the seventh minute.

Michael Ryan, Joe O’Dwyer and David Nealon added a point each for Burgess by the eleventh minute before Cahir responded by a goal by Travis McLoughlin to bring them within one point after thirteen minutes.

Joe O’Dwyer immediately replied with a goal for Burgess followed by a Paul Cahalan free, and two points from play by Michael Ryan to put Burgess ahead by seven points. Cahir had a point from a free from Patrick McDonagh, but Burgess responded with converted frees by Joe O’Dwyer and two from Paul Cahalan, and with the latter adding another play, brought their half time tally to 1-12. Cahir added a point from play from Jake O’Gorman, and four from Patrick McDonagh, three from play, to bring their half time score to 1-7 as they trailed by five points.

Burgess were first to score in the second half, and up to the 42nd minute scored 2-5 to take firm control with Joe O’Dwyer scoring two goals along with a point while Paul Cahalan added three points to his tally (2 frees), with Conor Grace also on target.

Cahir stayed in touch somewhat by scoring 1-4 by the mid-way point of the half with three from frees from Patrick McDonagh, a point from play from Dean Cummins and a goal from a free from Dan Delaney but they still trailed by nine points.

In the last fifteen minutes, Burgess added another 1-4, two from frees from Paul Cahalan, one from play from Joe O’Dwyer and Padraig Ryan, and Michael Ryan goal from play. Patrick McDonagh had three points from play and a converted free, and Dan Delaney added a point from play as Burgess ran out comprehensive winners.
