Centenary of the Tullamoylan Ambush

The Tullamoylan Ambush happened on Wednesday afternoon, March 7, 1923.

Free State soldiers, under the command of Captain Jed O’Dwyer, surrounded Duignan’s house in Tullamoylan where ten Republicans had been staying for a number of weeks. Jack O’Brien, Stephen Davoren and Matt Ryan escaped via the safety of a nearby river at the start of the ambush.

A few weeks later, Matt along with his colleague John Sheehy died in the Foilduff Ambush. Two Republicans, Joe Mangan and Sean Daly, were seriously injured in the Tullamoylan attack. Three days later, on March 10, Joe Mangan died from his injuries.

To mark the 100th anniversary of this tragic event, Silvermines Historical Society will host a presentation in Ryan Lackens, Dolla, on Friday, March 10, at 8pm. The presentation will be given by local man Denis Gleeson. Refreshments will be served afterwards and all are welcome.
