Ireland AM pay visit to Nenagh

Virgin Media’s morning show broadcast from town’s historical quarter

Nenagh was delighted to welcome Ireland AM to the town on Wednesday week last, February 15.

Deric Ó h’Artagáin, who travels around Ireland broadcasting the weather forecast from various locations, filmed segments around the town, culminating in the highlight of his visit from, as he put it, the tip-top of Nenagh – the top of Nenagh Castle. He was accompanied by Joan McKenna on camera.

The visit was arranged by Victoria Lee from Nenagh Tourist Office and Visitor Centre. Deric interviewed Tour Guide, Kevin Whelan and District Administrator Rosemary Joyce on top of the castle. The location looked resplendent in the early morning sunshine with the daffodils in full bloom. Kevin spoke about the building of the castle, which dates from the 1200s; the Butlers of Ormond, the 101 steps over four floors to the top, which is 100 feet above the ground, and the type of stone and mortar made using urine and horse hair, among other things!

Rosemary talked about Nenagh 800 and the celebration of the heritage and culture of the town and the people who had made Nenagh what it is today. She told the story of Ciarán from Dublin, who recently proposed to Pamela on the top of the castle.

Paul and Eric from Lakes Vikings Events Ltd added to the occasion and the clash of their swords and shields rang out across the town. Deric entered into the spirit of the occasion, donning a costume and taking part in the fray.

Nenagh Castle, Nenagh Heritage & Genealogy Centre and Nenagh Tourist Office & Visitor Centre are open to the public and admission is free of charge.
