At the end of the opening quarter in this Munster Post Primary Schools Senior ‘B’ Camogie final on Saturday, it looked as if Colaiste An Phiarsaigh Glanmire held all the aces as they led 0-6 to 0-1 but St Mary's Secondary School Nenagh had other ideas and slowly but surely they got themselves back into the game.
Working hard they began to gain a grip and turning it around with they went in at the interval leading by a point and it was well deserved as they never allowed the superb start Colaiste An Phiarsaigh Glanmire had gotten upset them.
The third quarter was again close, Coláiste An Piarsaigh got themselves level inside thirty seconds of the restart, but they never managed to regain the upper hand that they enjoyed in the opening quarter as St Mary’s never let the heads drop, all over the pitch they worked hard, their control of the ball was superb and they played unselfishly always looking for a players in a better position to off load possession to. Once St Mary’s regained the lead three minutes into the second half they got a firm grip on the game and they struck for vital goals that proved decisive in the finish as they ran out five point winners.
Coláiste an Phiarsaigh settled quickly with four points without reply Orlaith Ni Mhaoláin, Evie Ní Thuama, Emma Nic Giolla Phádraigh and Deirdre D Nic Cárthaigh all finding the range and with their defence closing down the St Mary’s attack the Tipperary girls could find no way through a strong Glanmire rear-guard where full back Liadan Nic Aoire was impressive.
Fifteen minutes in, Éimhear Troy had St Mary’s on the score-board converting a free but two in row from Orlaith Ní Mhaolain and Emma Nic Giolla Phádraigh ensured Coláiste an Phiarsaigh maintained control, but it was to be another ten minutes before they registered another score as St Mary’s came storming into the game.
Four points without reply from Emma Costello (2), Marie Ryan and Éimhear Troy had them within touching distance but Orlaith Ní Mhaolain rallied for Coláiste an Phiarsaigh to put two between the sides, but St Mary’s responded a long delivery down fired saw Jane Ryan win possession and offloading with lightning speed she set up Marie Ryan to finish to the net and with the sides exchanging points before the interval, St Mary’s led 1-6 to 0-8 at the interval.
Evie Ní Thuama quickly had Coláiste an Phiarsaigh back level inside second of the restart, but two points in a row saw St Mary’s regain the lead but Orlaith Ni Mhaolain narrowed the gap to a point before Lúasi Ni Mhuirí denied St. Mary’s with a superb save before Éimhear Troy struck for a goal to put four points between the sides as the game entered the final quarter.
Orlaith Ni Mhaolain pegged it back to three point with a pointed free but again Éimhear Troy was the thorn in the Coláiste an Phiarsaigh defence when she superbly handled a dropping ball, turned and first time to the net.
From the puck-out, Coláiste an Phiarsaigh attacked but Aoife Gleeson denied them with a good save but they were rewarded with an Emma Nic Giolla Phádraigh point before St Mary’s Iris Grace finished to the net with a long range effort which bounced from the keepers hand to the net. Now they were in total control and with the sides swapping points they maintained their lead, but Coláiste An Phiarsaigh added a late goal and a point to their tally but by now the outcome was decided.
St Mary’s progress to an All-Ireland semi-final next Saturday when they take on Gorey Communtity School from Wexford in Naomh Eanna GAA, Gorey at 1.00pm
