'The Irish Civil War in the Hills of Arra'

Arra Historical & Archaeological Society's first lecture in the winter/spring series is coming up on Thursday, January 19, at 8pm in Reidy’s in Newtown.

It is presented by John Flannery of Ormond Historical Society and is titled ‘Blood in the Heather; The Irish Civil War in the Hills of Arra’.

This talk will focus on the area between Ballina, Nenagh and Newport, a strategic area in terms of the securing of Limerick City. This is reflected in the intensity of the engagements in the area and in the subsequent response from both sides as the war progressed through its various stages. This talk will also look at the individuals involved locally and nationally, and how their stories can be explored further.

John is a prominent member of Ormond Historical Society and a member of the Tipperary in the Decade of Revolution commemoration group. He has carried out extensive non-partisan research on the War of Independence and Civil War period in Tipperary and nationally.

Membership is now due and, as per previous years, it is €20 for one person and €30 for a family. Non-members are welcome to the lecture and it is €5 for non-members.
