Double for Twomey in Roscommon

Paddy Twomey added to his significant success at the Curragh on Guineas weekend with two winners at Roscommon on Monday week last.

He saddled two winning favourites in back-to-back races, and both were ridden by Billy Lee. First up was Spasiba which scored a comfortable two and a half-length success in the ten-furlong maiden in the trainer’s own colours. A 7/4 favourite, she raced clear early inside the final furlong to win by four and a quarter lengths from Gavin Cromwell’s Pachmena.

Their double was completed as favourite Rosscarbery recorded a two and three-parts of a length win in the ten-furlong fillies’ handicap, another winner for owner Robert Moran. That was a third success at the meeting for the winning jockey who had also taken the opening claiming maiden on the Michael Grassick-trained Brown Eagle.

Gavin Ryan made all the running to win the concluding 12-furlong handicap on the Harry Rogers-trained Final Endeavour. The trainer, on the mark with Lord Erskine at the track earlier in the month, sent out the 12/1 chance to win by two and a quarter lengths from the Noel Meade-trained favourite Black Hawk Eagle.

Jake Coen provided trainer James McAuley with another claiming race success as Mischief Star took the opening contest at Gowran Park on Tuesday. The 14/1 chance led early in the straight to beat the staying-on Tooso by two lengths. It was a fifth winner of the season for the Fethard apprentice.

Big brother Ben was next into the winners’ enclosure as he rode the first of two winners for Johnny Murtagh. He landed the median auction maiden on favourite Flying Dolphin in the colours of Sean & Bernardine Mulryan, and half an hour later was back in the same spot as the Ann Marshall-owned One For Bobby, the favourite, scored a one and a quarter-length success in the fillies’ conditions’ race at the main expense of Show Of Stars.

The father and son team of Andy and Andrew Slattery took the seven-furlong handicap with Bells On Her Toes which battled well to see of the John Murphy-trained Bantry by a neck. A joint-favourite, the winner is owned and bred by Eithne and Geoffrey Thompson.

Jake Coen landed another claiming race at Fairyhouse on Friday where he partnered the Joseph O'Brien-trained Snapius to an easy success. The win set O'Brien up for another rewarding weekend and in the familiar colours of owner/breeder John Farrell, the 7/2 chance had an easy time of it as he raced clear to score by four and a half lengths from the Ger Lyons-trained Recurrent Dream. Both horses were subsequently claimed for €20,000 with the winner set to join James Nash and the running-up heading to Alice Haynes.

Ben Coen teamed up with Johnny Murtagh to land the evening’s finale with Karkiyna which scored a taking success in the seven-furlong fillies’ maiden. A well-backed chance, she led before halfway and won by three and a half lengths from the Jessica Harrington-trained Giulia Frasi.

Voice Of Angels made it three winners in a week for Jake Coen she scored a comfortable success in the eight-furlong conditions’ race at Navan on Saturday.

Joseph O'Brien’s charge had little difficulty in justifying her favourite odds as she scored by three and a quarter lengths from the Dermot Weld-trained Eclat De Lumiere. Joseph’s father Aidan landed a double on the card, sharing the success of the hugely impressive favourite Statuette in the opening fillies’ maiden and that of favourite Newfoundland in the thirteen-furlong maiden with Ryan Moore.

Donnacha O'Brien also landed a winner on the card as the Gavin Ryan-ridden Wodao made all the running to take the five-furlong maiden by three and a quarter lengths from the Michael O'Callaghan-trained Studio City. The winning favourite carried the colour of Atlantic Thoroughbreds.

Curraheen Princess landed her second Navan win for Fethard trainer Nicky Stokes when again getting the better the Liam McAteer-trained Amazing Emma in the five-furlong handicap. The Joe Doyle-ridden chance arrived late on the scene to beat the favourite by half a length for owner Tom Egan.

Amy Jo Hayes was a winner again as she took the concluding ten-furlong handicap on the Nigel Slevin-trained Five Zeros. The joint-favourite led passing the two-furlong pole and made the best of her way home to win by two and a quarter lengths from the David Dunne-trained Dinamine and Nathan Crosse.
