Newport College’s engineering link-up

Newport College is delighted to announce a new partnership with Takumi Precision Engineering. Takumi were set up in 1998 and are a leading global engineering solutions provider. They are experts in bespoke medical, aerospace and industrial component assembly and manufacturing. In 2021, the company, based in Limerick, hired an additional 60 staff with revenues expected to double to €20m over the next four years.

Takumi offer apprenticeship roles in their company and are willing to offer scholarships to Newport College students who are interested in pursuing Precision Engineering in Technological University of the Shannon: Midlands and Midwest (TUS). They are prepared to offer work experience initially to interested students to provide insight to their work roles. This is a unique opportunity for students in the school to explore a potential future career with a local engineering company. Further, it is in keeping with Newport College’s commitment to supporting students to pursue careers through different access routes.

In establishing the partnership with Newport College, Kevin McCarthy and Sarah Ross from Takumi visited our school on two occasions in October and November. During their initial visit they spoke with staff, viewed the school’s Engineering, Design and Communication Graphics and Construction Studies rooms and observed students working on their Leaving Certificate projects. During the subsequent visit in November, Kevin and Sarah presented an overview of Takumi and outlined some of the products they make to our Transition Year, LCA, Fifth and Sixth Year students. As we continue to develop this innovative partnership, interested students will visit Takumi in December and see the machinery, products and roles that are on offer.
