A late Austin Tierney goal ensured Shannon Rovers got one over on their fiercest rivals Borrisokane in what proved a closely-fought County Intermediate Hurling Championship Preliminary Quarter Final on Sunday.

Tierney netted with just two minutes remaining to propel Jim Williams’ charges into a one point lead at a crucial juncture in the game, and a lead which they maintained to the final whistle.

Coming somewhat against the run of play after Borrisokane had knifed over three consecutive points, the goal offered the Rovers a much-needed lifeline and one that they clung to tightly to ensure progression to the the county intermediate quarter-final against another near neighbour in Kiladangan.

Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze, the Rovers started brightly and raced into a five point lead with points from the impressive Alan Hogan before he gathered a delightful Sean Moran crossfield ball and struck low and hard for the opening goal after just seven minutes.
