'The Modreeny Ambush' - Ormond Historical Society lecture

The Ormond Historical Society's next lecture will take place on Monday December 7th at 8.30pm. The title of the lecture is 'The Modreeny Ambush' and it will be delivered by Gerard Heffernan.

The Modreeny ambush occurred on June 3rd 1921. This was a major engagement between Crown forces and the ASU (Flying Column) of the IRA 3rd Brigade.

The lecture will cover a detailed account of the build-up/aftermath of the ambush from both the IRA and Crown forces’ perspective. There will be particular emphasis on the controversial and unanswered aspects of the engagement.

The lecturer has researched this incident over the past 10 years and the research is ongoing. Ger Heffernan is a native of Ardcroney and now lives close to the  ambush location. He is a member of Cloughjordan Heritage Group, the Thomas MacDonagh Centre Management Committee, the Thomas MacDonagh 2016/1916 Centenary Committee Ormond, and a member of the Ormond Historical Society.

The venue, as usual, is the Abbey Court Hotel and the start time is 8.30pm. The lecture is open to all with free admission for society members. Non members: €5 admission. New members are always welcome and anyone coming along who wishes to join later will have their admission charge discounted against membership.
