Tipperary's Poetry Day Ireland Event April 28 Dromineer Literary Festival in association with Nenagh Arts Centre.

Events celebrating Poetry Day Ireland took place across the country on Thursday 28 April 2016.

In association with Nenagh Arts Centre, Dromineer Literary Festival hosted an evening with Tipperary poets Michael Coady, Paddy Moran and Seamus Hogan, who read poems with themes ranging from Tipperary rivers to the land and music.

Four local women, Fran O’Brien, Elizabeth McGrath, Betty Gough and Geraldine McNulty (who also introduced all of the readers) each read their favourite poems, wildly different choices, and all beautifully delivered. Harpist Laura O’Sullivan played beautiful Irish music between sets of readings.

Sean O’Mahony, a co-translator of Rilke with Seamus Hogan, read a selection of Rilke’s poems in English, and Joachim Fischer, Senior Lecturer at the University of Limerick, read the poems in German; exhilarating to hear. To close the evening, we showed a short film on poetry.

The Dromineer Literary Festival committee would like to thank, Tom Dowling, manager at Nenagh Arts Centre, to Michelle Donnellan and Gillian Staunton and the amazing ‘can-do’ team at the Centre, Arthur Mitchel, Neill O’Donnell and Tom Shanahan, a huge pleasure to work with.

The Thatched Cottage at Ballycommon very kindly lent us tables, and Lough Derg Yacht Club gave us the use of tablecloths and tea-light holders so that we could create an intimate café atmosphere for the evening.

We have finalized our programme for the 2016 annual festival, October 6-9. Please keep an eye on our website for more details. The Dromineer Literary Festival is managed by a volunteer committee and is grateful to our local sponsors for their continuing support, which ensures the continuing success of this prestigious festival in our county.
