Pedestrian struck on footpath
A womanappeared before Nenagh District Court recently after she drove into a pedestrian on a footpath and then left the scene of the accident.
Noah Hussein (40) of Dun Carrig, Ballycommon, pleaded guilty to a series of summonses arising from an incident on the Dark Road, Nenagh, on November 15, 2024. The court heard that Ms Hussein was an Egyptian national living in Ireland for 21 years. She had worked as an interpreter and with the Tipperary Refugee Resettlement Programme.
Ms Hussein apologised for the accident, which involved a collision with a male pedestrian. She did not have insurance at the time, though her counsel, Martin Dwan, explained that she had been a named driver on her husband’s insurance policy. Her husband changed the policy to another vehicle without her knowing.
The defendant was injured in the accident but had presented herself to Nenagh Garda Station immediately after being treated for her injuries. She had no previous convictions.
Judge Marie Keane refused to reduce a summons for dangerous driving to careless driving. She said Ms Hussein had mounted a footpath, collided with a pedestrian and then failed to remain at the scene.
Judge Keane was “very disturbed” to be informed that the defendant had been in Ireland for 21 years and was still using a French driving licence. She said her insurance could not have been valid for that reason. The judge imposed fines totalling €400 and disqualified Ms Hussein from driving for two years.
