A glimpse into the past

A reminiscent glimse into the lives of the local community of decades past through the lens of a photographic enthusiast will be one of the highlights of the celebration of Culture Night 2026 this weekend.

Newport Development Association is delighted to celebrate Culture Night 2026 with a free community event at Newport Community Centre on this Friday, September 18, from 7 to 9.30pm.

The evening will feature an engaging illustrated talk, as well as the nostalgic photographic exhibition, and an open mic session celebrating Irish music, song and dance.

Step back in time for a rare glimpse of rural Newport through the lens of local photographer, the late Paddy Humphreys.

This unique display of historical photographs captures everyday life in Newport during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. The collection offers a wonderful opportunity to rediscover familiar faces, treasured memories and the stories that helped shape our community.

'Away with the Fairies' will be an illustrated talk by Patrick J Ryan, Chairman, Newport Historical and Archaeological Society.

Throughout Irish history, belief in the 'Otherworld', the realm of "the Good People" or "the Little People", was widespread. This illustrated talk examines these beliefs through the lens of historical and archaeological studies.

It will uncover the ideas of our ancestors surrounding ringforts, protection rituals and folk magic. The talk will also explore the role of fairy healers in providing cures for people and farm animals, offering a fascinating insight into Ireland's rich folklore tradition.

Following the talk and exhibition, everyone is invited to enjoy an open mic session featuring Irish music, song and dance. Refreshments will be served on the night. This is a free event and all are welcome for a memorable evening of history, heritage, culture and community.
