Moneygall grounded by impressive Moycarkey

Moycarkey/Borris came out deserving winners in the battle of the last two intermediate champions in the fourth round of the Tipperary Senior Camogie Championship on Saturday.

Moneygall can have no complaints as they were outplayed and outclassed in almost all departments and the twenty point margin was more than deserved for the Mid outfit, who are now in a strong position to make the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile for Moneygall, who have now suffered two defeats in-a-row, have to wait to see how the final round plays out before knowing if they will advance, having played all their games.

The North outfit will be very disappointment with their performance, as apart from the opening fifteen minutes, they couldn’t get any kind of momentum, showing nothing of the form shown to date.

One of the big questions about this Moneygall side was how would they perform if Mairead Teehan had a quiet game and judging by this performance they struggle.

Moneygall, through Emma Costello, opened the scoring in just the second minute, with an excellent finish, but Moycarkey were level less than a minute later through Tipp star Sarah Corcoran and were ahead through Joan O’Keeffe soon after.

The fast-paced start continued and Moneygall would be back ahead two minutes later thanks to two excellent scores from Caithlyn Treacy, the second a top-drawer finish from a very tight angle.

The 2025 intermediate champions were level again in the eighth minute through an Alisha Kearney effort. This would be the last score until the 16th minute when Moycarkey would go on a spree, scoring 1-4 in three minutes, as Moneygall failed to cope with the intensity of the visitors.

An Emma O’Sullivan free was added to thirty seconds later by a Sophie Coughlan goal after a poor clearance by a Moneygall defender, and Coughlan was picked out by a wonderful ball and took on her marker before finishing smartly to the back of the net.

Just over a minute later, Ciara Shelly added Moycarkey’s fifth point, and straight from the puckout she pointed again, and again from the next puckout, pointed again from Kate Ralph.

The home side would settle again, and two minutes later, Mary Ryan would hit a superb score from distance, and then in the 26th minute Mairead Teehan got in on the action via a free, before Joan O’Keeffe pointed again for Moycarkey when a free dropped short and she doubled over the bar.

Another Teehan free reduced the gap, but it was Moycarkey, through a Emma O’Sullivan free, who would have the final say of the half as they led 1-9 to 0-6 at the break.

The second half started a bit slower than the first, but it was Moycarkey who took control in the fifth minute when following a long ball into Sarah Corcoran, she laid it off to the on-running Emma O’Sullivan who finished to the net.

Three minutes later, the game was put to bed when O’Sullivan, following a goalmouth scramble, found herself in possession and had the easiest of finishes to the net.

It would be another ten minutes before the next score through a well-taken point by Alisha Kearney.

Moneygall would respond with a point just over a minute later from a Mairead Teehan free, their only score of the half.

Emma O’Sullivan pointed again soon after, and as the puckout was being taken, referee Mike Ryan awarded a free into Moycarkey, which O’Sullivan pointed.

There would still be time for two more Moycarkey goals, the first in the 54th minute through Sophie Coughlan, when a shot fell short and she picked it up and rounded the keeper before tapping in.

Then it was the turn of Alisha Kearney in the 58th minute to raise a green flag, lobbing the ball over the Moneygall keeper as Moycarkey picked up their first win of the championship and now face Burgess/Duharra, knowing a win will put them into the quarter finals, while for Moneygall they need one of Moycarkey or Cashel to lose in their final game to advance to a quarter final.
