Return of Dromineer Nenagh Literary Festival
Brendan Begley for Nenagh event
In what promises to be a very special bilingual event Brendan Begley will bring his extraordinary music and stories to Nenagh Arts Centre as part of the Dromineer Nenagh Literary Festival on Sunday, October 11. The event is sponsored by Tipperary EU Presidency Culture Programme
Renowned musician Begley will be in conversation with Nenagh musician Brian Morrisey as well as performing his own music and telling stories from his recent memoir.
The first 30 minutes of the event will be bilingual followed by 45 minutes of chat, music and stories.
He’ll be discussing his book Clann an tSeanamhuintire/Of My People which is a rich, personal account of a life devoted to music, culture, and the Irish language. In this bilingual autobiography, Breanndán traces his journey as a musician, artist, activist, festival organiser, and television presenter, reflecting on the people, places, and traditions that shaped him. This mix of memoir and stories from the North Kerry Gaeltacht is a celebration of a vibrant cultural heritage and a testament to the enduring spirit of a unique musical family.
Brendan recently performed at the funeral of Glen Hansard in St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin along with members of The Frames, Bono, Liam O’Maonlaí, Rónán Ó Snodaigh and Damian Dempsey.
He was the subject of a 2023 film directed by Mark McLoughlin which documented his 15 year struggle to obtain planning permission to build a small house on his ancestor’s land on the Dingle Peninsula. Even though he has the planning permission now – he continues to campaign for native people to build and live in their own communities.
Brian Morrissey is a renowned musician, composer, arranger and music educator from Nenagh. As a performer and collaborator, Brian has shared the stage and recorded with some of the world’s greatest musicians, primarily in the traditional Irish music genre and also in the jazz, classical, contemporary, ecclesiastical and country genres. A selection of artists that Brian has collaborated with include Béla Fleck, John Spillane, Luka Bloom, Donal Lunny, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin (RIP), Nathan Carter, Liam Lawton, Kevin Crawford and Niall, Cillian and Caoimhín Vallely.
