Investigation works in Silvermines
SIGA Hydro Ltd is to complete a programme of ground investigation works ahead of construction of the hydroelectric pumped storage power project proposed at Silvermines.
The company has received planning permission to carry out the works on lands south of the former Magcobar mine site at Garryard West and Gortshaneroe townlands. The works comprise collection of 16 hand-augured soil samples and one rotary percussion hydrogeological borehole. A Natura Impact Statement was submitted to Tipperary Co Council with the planning application.
The purpose of the ground investigation works is to gather information in relation to the upper part of the main site. The council was informed that a maximum of two days of activity is anticipated for the soil sampling, and approximately five days of overall activity is planned for the borehole. The proposed hydroelectric power plant will generate enough electricity to power approximately 185,000 households.
